Who is Matt Toohey?
I’m a strategic communications leader with years of experience working at the intersection of sports, media, and storytelling. Currently, I serve as the Director of Communications, Broadcasting & Baseball Information for the Rochester Red Wings, overseeing public relations, media relations, broadcasting, in-game production, and baseball information across multiple platforms.
My role blends leadership, creativity, and operational execution. I manage high-visibility messaging, serve as a primary communications advisor to senior leadership, coordinate all player and coaching staff media relations, and produce core organizational content, including media guides, press releases, game recaps, and digital features. I also lead broadcast operations and control room upgrades while overseeing and developing a full internship program.
Before transitioning fully into professional sports communications, my background was rooted in player development and coaching at both the collegiate and elite youth levels. As Pitching Coach and Head of Player Development at St. John Fisher University, I helped modernize the program’s player development infrastructure by leveraging advanced technology and data-driven tools, while mentoring award-winning athletes and building individualized development systems. That experience sharpened my ability to communicate complex ideas clearly, manage people, and operate in fast-paced, performance-driven environments.
Across every role, I’ve been driven by the same goal: telling compelling stories, building strong systems, and creating experiences that resonate with athletes, fans, media, and partners alike. Whether it’s shaping a brand’s voice, managing live broadcasts, or leading a communications team, I bring a strategic mindset, attention to detail, and a deep understanding of sports culture to everything I do.

• Lead Communications Department overseeing Public Relations, Media Relations, Baseball Information, In-Game Production, and broadcast operations across MLB.com, MiLB.com, and Bally Sports Live.
• Serve as primary communications advisor to senior leadership, ensuring consistent and strategic brand messaging.
• Manage all player and coaching staff media requests, interviews, and public appearances.
• Oversee hiring, training, and management of the organization’s internship program.
• Direct upgrades and ongoing maintenance of broadcast and production control rooms. • Produce media guides, press releases, game recaps, media advisories, and digital content.
• Oversee and maintain all content on MiLB.com/rochester.
• Prospect and sell partnerships and advertising inventory across organizational marketing platforms.

• Oversaw and managed the entire pitching staff, including individualized development and performance programming.
• Designed integrated strength, mobility, recovery, and throwing programs using Driveline Baseball’s TRAQ software.
• Mentored the 2021 NCAA Division III National Player of the Year, eight All-Region pitchers, and three Empire 8 Pitchers of the Year.
• Led modernization of player development infrastructure using TrackMan, Edgertronic, Blast Motion, Pitch AI, and Synergy.
• Created advanced scouting reports and opponent analysis using in-house tools and Synergy.
